The name MONOLITH is derived from the Greek word "monólithos", which means "single stone". This symbolizes the solid, one-piece ceramic structure of the grills, which is known for its outstanding energy efficiency and stability. The origin: The term "kamado" comes from the Japanese and means "oven" or "hearth".
Thanks to a deliberately chosen, coarser structure, MONOLITH achieves lower thermal conductivity in the ceramic and therefore significantly higher thermal shock resistance.
The design has its roots in Japanese clay ovens, which were prized centuries ago for their stability and energy efficiency and served as a central fireplace for baking and cooking. Modern kamados are no longer made of clay, but of high-quality ceramic, which is much more resistant and optimally meets the requirements for stability and energy efficiency.
The special material properties of ceramic, in particular its excellent heat storage capacity, the tightness of the cooking space and its ability to reflect heat, create a unique microclimate in modern kamados. The dome-shaped design ensures optimum heat distribution. This preserves the moisture in the food and produces particularly juicy, aromatic grilling results
Thanks to the excellent heat storage capacity of the ceramic and the precise temperature control, a kamado enables up to 24 hours of low-temperature grilling with just 2 kg of charcoal. This efficiency makes the kamado ideal for long, gentle cooking with minimal fuel consumption
With MONOLITH, we use a high-quality silicate ceramic in combination with a mineral glaze. We give a lifetime guarantee on the extremely durable, UV and acid-resistant ceramic.
Our grills combine tradition and craftsmanship from Yixing, the home of high-quality ceramics, with the precision and quality standards of German engineering. Production in China, the country of origin of porcelain, guarantees short supply chains for the required raw materials and access to the region's excellent ceramics expertise. By combining precise robotics with elaborate manual work, we are able to guarantee first-class quality at a reasonable price. Production in Europe would currently not be competitive due to the high production costs.
MONOLITH has always been developed by real barbecue enthusiasts who combine their passion for barbecuing with sound practical knowledge. Since the company was founded, suggestions from professionals have been incorporated directly into every stage of development. The experience of professional barbecue masters and restaurateurs shapes the continuous optimization of MONOLITH systems and guarantees maximum functionality and versatility. This results in products that are perfectly tailored to the needs of the barbecue community.
The fundamental difference to an oven or gas grill is that the MONOLITH uses radiant heat from the ceramic instead of circulating hot air. This keeps the food much juicier and more aromatic.
The kamado is operated with charcoal and heated by the chimney effect. Air flows into the combustion chamber through the air inlet opening and supplies the embers with oxygen. The exhaust air flows out again at the top via the exhaust air valve.
The temperature can be set to the exact degree via the supply and exhaust air openings. An effective temperature range of 70-400 °C can be used.
Thanks to the heat-storing ceramic, very little energy is required to keep the MONOLITH at the desired temperature.
This means that we can work at low temperatures for up to 24 hours with just 2 kg of charcoal. All conceivable cooking methods can be used in the MONOLITH: Direct grilling, indirect grilling, smoking, braising, drying, cooking, roasting.
The MONOLITH ceramic ensures that there is always a constant temperature in the cooking chamber and that there are no temperature fluctuations, even with changing or low outside temperatures.
Matthias Otto discovered ceramic barbecues in the USA in 2008. As a passionate barbecue enthusiast, he was fascinated by their heat retention and versatility. They outperformed conventional smokers and Matthias was certain that his search for the perfect barbecue appliance was over.
As ceramic grills were hardly available in Europe and importing them from the USA was difficult, he decided to develop kamado grills himself. His passion led him so deeply into the subject that the trained textile engineer gave up his father's company to found MONOLITH.
The search for a production facility led him to Yixing, China. There, where ceramics have been made for thousands of years, he found the perfect know-how. Since then, the fusion of traditional ceramic craftsmanship and German engineering has resulted in high-temperature resistant, durable and versatile barbecues that combine tradition, perfection and innovation.
